5 Warning Signs Your AC Capacitor Is Failing
The run capacitor helps the compressor and fan motor start and keep running smoothly. When it weakens, the motors work harder and fail sooner.
Common signs
- Outdoor unit hums but does not start. The motor is trying to start without enough boost.
- Fan spins slowly or needs a push. A weak capacitor cannot give the fan motor enough torque.
- Air is warm but the unit is running. The compressor may not be starting properly.
- Unit shuts off by itself. Overload protection trips when the motor draws too much current.
- Swollen or leaking capacitor. A bulging top or oil leak means it must be replaced.
Replacing it safely
Always switch off power and discharge the capacitor first. Replace it with the same microfarad (µF) value and an equal or higher voltage rating. For dual capacitors, match both values.
